Every day is special for women to get respect in the society, equal rights in every nation and of course a value in home and at workplace. However, a day is celebrated for some achievements on that day or due to other reasons – once in a year. The March 8th of every year is international women’s day celebrated globally for the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day is also about marking a Call to Action for speeding up equality of women in the society and at every step. The campaign was started in the year 1910 by a German Activist – Clara Zetkin after getting approval from the International Socialist Congress to create an international version of the U.S. Holiday. On 19th March, 1911, the first International Women’s Day or IWD was celebrated with the help of Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. To mark the day and to make it successful, more than one million people attended rallies during that time.

The March 8th is the honoring date for the achievement of women and promoting women’s rights It is a registered holiday in varied nations; while it has been sponsored by the United Nations since 1975. In the early 20s century, IWD grew out of efforts to promote the right of women. The First National Woman’s Day was held in 1909 by the Socialist Party of America on the suggestion of activist Theresa Malkiel – mainly to highlight the women’s issues. It was observed for four years.

With the passage of time, it was celebrated in different countries by keeping in mind varied key points.

In 1917, women in St Petersburg Russia celebrated the day by staging in strike to protest food shortages, poor living conditions and World War I. The strike for bread and peace helped giving rise to the Russian Revolution in 1917 – led to the abdication of Nicholas II on March 15th. In the year 1921, the date was officially changed to March 8th and from that time the day is celebrated at the International Women’s Day.

Now, when the March 8th is declared as the International Women’s Day, it is the important date to celebrate in varied ways like:

  • Achievements of women in different domains 
  • Educate and awareness raise for women and their equality rights  
  • Call for positive change advancing women in diverse industries and domains ​​​​​​

Lobby for accelerated gender parity and fundraising campaigns for charities that are female focused. It is not just a fixed date; everyone can play a crucial part to help forge gender equality. In some countries like Uzbekistan, Serbia, Albania and Macedonia, women’s day is a combined holiday that is celebrated with Mother’s Day.

Colors That Symbolize the International Women’s Day 
Green, White and Purple are the three main colors to symbolize the International Women’s Day. Green stands for hope; while purple is the symbol of justice and dignity and being loyal. White is the representation of purity, albeit a controversial concept. These colors were originated from the Women’s social and political union in the year of 1908 in the UK.

National Women’s Day in India is celebrated to honor the contribution of Sarojini Naidu to the independent struggle, women’s emancipation and others. It is the day 13th February – marked as National Women’s Day in India. It is the date when Sarojini Naidu was born in the year of 1879.
